Tax Year

The standard tax year in the Slovak Republic is the calendar year ending on 31 December. Alternate tax years are possible with notification given to the tax authorities.

Tax Return Filing

The annual tax return is due within 3 months following the close of the tax year. A 3-month extension may be granted as long as it is applied for at least 15 days before the deadline.

An extension of 6 months is available in certain cases subject to approval, including tax returns by non-residents with a permanent establishment in the Slovak Republic.

COVID-19 Emergency Measures

In response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Slovak Republic has extended the deadline for filing the corporate tax returns to 30 June 2020.

Tax Payments

Taxpayers are generally required to make advance payments depending on the tax liability of the previous year as follows:

If the previous year's tax liability exceeded EUR 16,600 monthly advance payments are due equal to 1/12 if the previous year's tax liability;
If the previous year's tax liability did not exceed EUR 16,600 but exceeded EUR 5,000 (increased from EUR 2,500, effective 1 January 2020),quarterly advance payments are due equal to 1/4 if the previous year's tax liability; or
If the previous year's tax liability did not exceed EUR 5,000 (increased from EUR 2,500, effective 1 January 2020), and for certain newly established businesses, no advance payments are due.

For companies eligible for the reduced tax rate of 15% (effective 1 January 2020), the advance tax will be required to be calculated and paid considering the standard 21% rate, and the reduced rate will be applied after the final income amount is determined.

Payments are due by the end of the month or quarter. When taxable income is expected to decrease, taxpayers may request a reduction in the advance payment amount.

The final payment for the year is due within 3 months of the close of the tax year, even if an extension is granted for the return filing deadline.

E-filing is available for companies that have an authorized electronic signature or have otherwise been approved to file electronically. Information for e-filing can be found on the Slovakian tax administration website (Slovakian language).
