Tax Year

The tax year in Zimbabwe is the calendar year i.e., 1 January to 31 December. Alternative tax years are allowed, subject to approval. For businesses in the first year of operations, a period of less or more than 12 months is accepted in order to match with a future year-end.

Tax Return Filing

Annual tax returns must be filed by 30 of April following the close of the previous tax year. Taxpayers with a year of assessment other than the tax year must submit the tax return within 4 months after the year of assessment as approved by the Commissioner-General.

Non-resident e-commerce platform operators or their representative taxpayers are required to submit a return in a form prescribed by the Commissioner-General, declaring the total income derived in every quarter of a year of assessment.

Tax Payments

Companies in Zimbabwe are required to make 4 quarterly advance tax payments based on the estimated tax liability of the current year as follows:

First payment of 10% by 25 March;
Second payment of 25% by 25 June;
Third payment of 30% by 25 September; and
Fourth payment of 35% by 20 December.

Any balance tax exceeding 10% of the total tax liability due may be subject to a late payment interest penalty (see Sec. 14.5.).

The quarterly payment dates are for taxpayers using the calendar year as their tax year. Alternate dates can be applied for when using an alternate tax year.

Non-resident e-commerce platform operators or their representative taxpayers are also required to make quarterly payments of taxes in foreign currency by the prescribed due dates above.

Effective 1 January 2022, tax recovery rules are introduced in relation to beneficial ownership (see Sec. 13.5.), wherein no person deriving benefit from any business or property in respect of which tax is recoverable may avoid liability from paying the tax on the basis that they are not the beneficial owner(s) of the business or property in question, unless:

Details of the actual beneficial owner(s) are fully disclosed in any return relating to such business or property that was filed within a period of not more than 12 months preceding the date when any claim for the recovery of the tax in question is made; and
The beneficial owner(s) is ordinarily resident in Zimbabwe or is otherwise amenable to being sued for the recovery of the tax in Zimbabwe.

Availability of E-Filing

Electronic filing is mandatory in Zimbabwe. Online services including registration and filing can be done through the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority’s e-service platform. A new simplified e-taxes platform is also available from April 2023 for taxpayers to submit tax returns and view the compliance status.
