On 31 July 2020, the European Commission announced proposed changes to the EU VAT Directive to accommodate trade with Northern Ireland following the Brexit transition period by allowing VAT rules to continue to apply when it comes to goods traded in Northern Ireland. The proposed changes would not apply to services.
