On 19 October 2012, Law Decree No. 179 of 18 October 2012, was published in the Official Gazette No. 194. The Decree contains, among others, specific measures to incentivize innovative start-up companies, in order to encourage the growth and development of the Italian economy.
According to article 25 of the Law Decree, a company incorporated under Italian law or a Societas Europaea may qualify as a start-up company if it:
