Japan is currently considering the introduction of reduced consumption tax rates in addition to the standard consumption tax rate of 8%, which currently applies. A proposal, which is reportedly supported by Japanese industry and consumer groups, includes a zero-rate for basic and perishable foods, and evaluates the impact on adjusted rates for other goods.
