According to recent reports, officials from China and Italy met on 18 December 2017 and agreed to begin negotiations for a new income tax treaty. Any resulting treaty must be finalized, signed, and ratified before entering into force, and once in force and effective, would replace the 1986 tax treaty between the two countries.
